Apple Magic TrackPad Features

Apple quietly released a brand new input device to go along with their line of desktop products, the Magic Trackpad. Its a large touch surface that resembles the trackpads on Apple’s MacBooks, is a standalone device that works wirelessly over Bluetooth. It has a glass surface (same as the one on the current MacBooks) and supports multi-touch gestures. With the launch of this new device, Apple’s multi-touch gestures can be enjoyed on any Mac computer. Here are some pictures.
A few things about the new Magic Trackpad that are noteworthy -
The trackpad has rubber feet which prevents it from skidding on your desk.

From the design, though a button seems impossible, but Apple managed to put buttons beneath the rubber feet, so that the whole trackpad acts as a button, you can apply pressure anywhere to click.

The trackpad has an aluminium design, similar to Apple’s wireless keyboard, and is almost dimensionally similar to it too, so that they look like a part of a set together. If you already own an Apple wireless keyboard, then this new device will go great with it.

The cylindrical compartment at the back of the trackpad (as seen in above pictures) is a container for the 2 AA batteries which power the trackpad. Apple claims that the trackpad has inbuilt energy saving features, and that a single charge is enough to last for ‘months’.

To get the Magic Trackpad to work with your iMac, you’ll need the Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update, available via Software Update, for using the multi-touch gestures.
The Magic Trackpad is priced at USD 69 and is available at the Apple online store. Apple’s Magic Trackpad

No Sign Of Launch Of Ipad In INDIA

On July 23, 2010, Apple rolled out all models of the iPad to 9 more countries – Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore, in addition to the 10 countries in which it is available currently (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US) to make for a total of 19 countries where the iPad is officially sold. As usual, India has been left out of the league.
At the time of writing this post, the official page for the iPad on the Apple (India) website has no links for purchase or prices, just a simple ‘Notify Me’ button, which is to get updates related to the iPad by email.
Apple has always treated India as a third world country, with no retail stores and no reachability. Even with the iPhone, Apple launched it in India almost an year after it was announced in the US and at ridiculous prices (greater than 30k INR for the cheapest model). The trend for the iPad looks similar, and there is no news on when Apple is going to launch it in India.
Even though there is no direct way to purchase an iPad in India, for enthusiasts who do no want to wait to get their hands on an iPad, there are a lot of sources (albiet unofficial or maybe even illegal) from where you can purchase an iPad.
eBay India
The iPad is readily available on eBay India, of course, at a premium. At the time of writing this, the lowest prices found on eBay are as follows -
  1. 16 GB Wi-Fi Only – INR 36,999
  2. 32 GB Wi-Fi Only – INR 40,150
  3. 64 GB Wi-Fi Only – INR 45,600
  1. 16 GB Wi-Fi + 3G – INR 44,990
  2. 32 GB Wi-Fi + 3G – INR 51,999
  3. 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G – INR 54,899
Other Sources
There are other online stores such as ShopYourWorld.com which allow you to purchase goods from USA and get them shipped to India by paying for the shipping costs (there are also a few offers/discount coupons available by which you may avail free shipping). Apart from these online stores, grey markets in India such as Ghaffar Market in Delhi also sell all models of iPads, albiet under the covers.
Even though the iPad is available through lots of channels, I would strongly discourage any regular users to buy it because there is no service available for the iPad in India yet. Every iPad comes with 1 year of warranty and 90 days of complimentary phone support but there is no way for you to avail this warranty until the iPad is officially launched in India. So just in case your iPad goes bad, due to a manufacturing defect, or you may face any problem, you’ll have to send it back to the US (or a country where service is available) or revert to local repair guys, which would void your warranty.
Also, the 3G models are practically useless until we have widespread availability of 3G networks in India, which will take at least 6 months or an year to establish. Final verdict: wait for it if you can, but if you can’t, buy the cheapest Wi-Fi only model to get a taste of it.

Dell to Launch Mobile Phones in India

Dell Mobile Phones
Dell, a company that you would normally associate with laptops and desktop PCs, is now getting into the mobile phone business here in India.
The company has launched a major ad campaign in all major newspapers inviting “distributors” for their mobile phones though the timeframe is not exactly clear nor do we know the kind of phones that they are planning to sell in India.
Except for Android based Dell Aero and Dell Streak, which is more like a mini-tablet than a smart phone, Dell has little to offer as far as phones are concerned. There are reports that Dell is working on a Windows Phone 7 based device called the Dell Lightning but we don’t know if this is real.
The mobile market in India is huge but it’s a fairly price-sensitive one at the same time – most people still prefer a BlackBerry or a Nokia smartphone over an iPhone. It will therefore be interesting to see what Dell has in store for Indian mobile users.

Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Wave

    Samsung GalaxySamsung Wave
Samsung Mobiles recently introduced two new GSM mobile phones here – the Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) and Samsung Wave (S8500).
There are lot of features that are common between Wave and Galaxy S. For instance, both are powered by a 1GH processor (ARM Cortex A8), they have a 5 megapixel still camera and both support 720p HD video recording and playback.
There’re however some major differences as well. Samsung Galaxy S has a 4” screen while Wave is smaller with has a 3.3” display. Wave has a built-in Flash which is missing in Galaxy.
Samsung Galaxy S is powered by Google’s Android OS (it runs 2.1 Éclair version though the latest is 2.2 or Froyo) while Wave runs on BADA, Samsung’s own OS for mobile phones. Therefore you’ll have a wider selection of app for Galaxy as every app available in the Android Marketplace should ideally run on that phone.
The prices difference is huge. You can have a Samsung Wave for around 17k while the Android powered Galaxy S is around 28k in India.
Considering that some tech experts, who have reviewed the Galaxy S in detail, find it a worth alternative to the iPhone, it may be something worth exploring.

IPhone 4 Coming To India in October

    iPhone 4
If you are looking to buy the latest iPhone 4 in India through the official channels, you might have to wait until Diwali.
An Airtel executive recently confirmed to Reuters that the company is planning to launch iPhone 4 in India but around the September or October timeframe.
There’s no mention of price but it will obviously cost you more than a mid-range laptop. It is also not known if Apple / Airtel will offer free bumpers to iPhone 4 owners in India like they are do in the U.S. to fix the antenna related issues.
Vodafone, the only other cellular operator that sells the iPhone in India, has not confirmed their own launch dates yet.
If you want an iPhone 4 now and don’t mind paying the premium, there’s always the unofficial route – buy a locked iPhone 4 from US and unlock it on your own or get one from either the UK or Canada. Apple is ‘officially’ selling unlocked iPhones in these countries and therefore they’ll work out-of-the-box with any GSM (micro) SIM.

Give your Eyes a Break with the 20-20-20 Rule

If you spend a good part of your day using the computer, the 20-20-20 rule, that I recently learned recently from one of my doctors, might also help you relax your tired eyes.

    Relax Eyes

The rule goes something like this.

The screen is bright and therefore, if you don’t blink your eyes as often as you should while working at the computer for long hours, you can have dry eyes sometimes even followed by redness.
To help you deal with this problem, the 20-20-20 rule suggest that after every 20 minutes, you (the computer user) should take a break for at least 20 seconds and look at objects that are 20 feet away from you.

Since it is nearly impossible for any computer users to remember that they have to take a break every 20 minutes, there are free software programs that can help you in your mission.
For instance, there’s a Windows utility called Eye Defender that sits in the system tray and, after a fixed interval, it will auto-run a visual training (see video below in full screen) for the eyes on your screen.

You are supposed to follow the pointer on the screen and this in turn should help relax your eyes.
WorkRave is another handy app that reminds you to take breaks at regular intervals to prevent computer related stress (including eyestrain).

It offers two kinds of breaks – micro-breaks, these are short and are mean to relax your eyes, and then there are rest-breaks where you are supposed to walk or stretch a little. Workrave also has a built-in wizard that demonstrates the various types of stretching exercises that you can do during these breaks.
    Stretching Exercies

If you are an active computer user, these tools need to be on your desktop.
